Salmonella Outbreak
Severity
200 people sick and 26 hospitalized across 6 provinces to date. This update includes additional recalled pistachio products, bringing the total to 370+ products linked to the outbreak. Affected products were sold nationwide through major retailers and specialty grocery stores, including Fruiticana, Nature’s Emporium, Bulk Barrel, and Sun Farm. Do not consume, use, sell, serve or distribute recalled pistachios and pistachio-containing products. Outbreak remains over.
Who's At Risk?
Salmonella mainly impacts young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Most healthy adults and children rarely become seriously ill after exposure to Salmonella.
Symptoms
Symptoms may include fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), and abdominal pain. Illness usually occurs within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. In rare cases, the organism can get into the bloodstream resulting in severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
