Who's At Risk?
People with weakened immune systems, chronic liver disease (such as cirrhosis or hepatitis), and those with conditions like diabetes, cancer, or kidney disease. Older adults are also at higher risk of severe illness. People with open wounds exposed to warm coastal waters or raw seafood are at increased risk of infection and serious complications.
Symptoms
Symptoms may include watery diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and fever. In some cases, infection can progress rapidly to severe illness, especially when the bacteria enter the bloodstream or through open wounds exposed to contaminated seawater or seafood.
