People with a history of asthma, multiple allergies, or previous severe allergic reactions may be more likely to experience serious reactions. In susceptible individuals, even small amounts of penicillin residues may trigger an allergic response, including anaphylaxis.

Symptoms may include hives, itching, skin rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, wheezing, coughing, difficulty breathing, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, or diarrhea in individuals allergic to penicillin. Severe allergic reactions may lead to anaphylaxis, a life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical attention.
