207 people sick and 78 hospitalized across the UK to date. Outbreak is linked to imported eggs and chicken products as the likely sources. Affected products were sold UK-wide. Investigation is ongoing to identify the exact source of contamination and determine the role of imported eggs and poultry products in the outbreak.
Who's At Risk?
Salmonella mainly impacts young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Most healthy adults and children rarely become seriously ill after exposure to Salmonella.
Symptoms
Symptoms may include fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), and abdominal pain. Illness usually occurs within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. In rare cases, the organism can get into the bloodstream resulting in severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
