Salmonella Outbreak
Severity
528 people sick, 67 hospitalized, and 2 deaths reported to date. In this update, two additional Salmonella clusters have been identified, bringing the investigation to 3 clusters. Outbreaks were linked to imported eggs, with cases associated with eating out at small cafés, restaurants, and takeaway businesses. There is no evidence that UK-produced eggs are affected. The risk to the general public remains low, and the investigation is ongoing.
Who's At Risk?
Salmonella mainly impacts young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Most healthy adults and children rarely become seriously ill after exposure to Salmonella.
Symptoms
Symptoms may include fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), and abdominal pain. Illness usually occurs within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. In rare cases, the organism can get into the bloodstream resulting in severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
