2 people reported sick. Both cases involve close contact with dairy cattle and/or infected poultry. Viral fragments are also detected in 1 in 5 retail milk samples nationwide. However, pasteurized milk is declared safe at this time. Consumption of raw/unpasteurized milk and milk products may carry risk and not recommended. Investigation is ongoing.
Who's At Risk?
The FDA and USDA have indicated that based on the information currently available, our commercial milk supply is safe because: 1) the pasteurization eliminates pathogens, and 2) the diversion or destruction of milk from sick cows.
