Severity
345 people sick and 36 hospitalized across 27 states to date. Outbreak linked to fresh jalapeños from Sinaloa, Mexico. Affected products were distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors to restaurants, wholesalers and food service companies nationwide. Chipotle and QDOBA have removed the recalled jalapeños from their stores. Do not eat, sell, or serve recalled products. Investigation ongoing to determine whether the linked jalapeños also reached grocery stores.
Who's At Risk?
Salmonella mainly impacts young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Most healthy adults and children rarely become seriously ill after exposure to Salmonella.
Symptoms
Symptoms may include fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), and abdominal pain. Illness usually occurs within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. In rare cases, the organism can get into the bloodstream resulting in severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
