Salmonella Outbreak
Severity
1,061 (247 new) people sick, 234 (33 new) hospitalized, and 2 dead across 46 states and PR to date. Children under 5 account for nearly a quarter of cases. The true number of sick people is likely higher than reported, and additional states may be affected. The number of multistate outbreaks linked to backyard poultry has increased to 10, including those involving chickens and ducks. The largest outbreak has unusually high number of people reporting contact with ducks. Backyard poultry can carry and spread Salmonella even if they appear healthy. Investigation is ongoing.
Who's At Risk?
Salmonella mainly impacts young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Most healthy adults and children rarely become seriously ill after exposure to Salmonella.
Symptoms
Symptoms may include fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), and abdominal pain. Illness usually occurs within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. In rare cases, the organism can get into the bloodstream resulting in severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
