Salmonella Outbreak
Severity
32 people sick (10 new) and 3 hospitalized across 6 states (2 new) to date. The true number of sick people may be higher than reported. Broccoli sprouts grown by Evergreen Fresh Sprouts are linked. Recalled broccoli sprouts tested positive for the outbreak strain. Affected products were sold through food co-ops, restaurants, foodservice customers, and grocery stores in 3 states (and likely more). This outbreak is separate from the recent alfalfa sprout outbreak. Do not eat, serve, or sell recalled products. Investigation is ongoing.
Who's At Risk?
Salmonella mainly impacts young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Most healthy adults and children rarely become seriously ill after exposure to Salmonella.
Symptoms
Symptoms may include fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), and abdominal pain. Illness usually occurs within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. In rare cases, the organism can get into the bloodstream resulting in severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
