E. coli Outbreak
Severity
13 people sick, 8 hospitalized, and 3 HUS cases reported across 9 states to date. More than half of the sick people are children 5 years old and younger. Graziers raw milk cheeses sold by Sierra Nevada Cheese Company are linked to the outbreak. Products were sold nationwide. The affected products have a long shelf life. Do not eat, serve, or sell recalled raw milk cheeses. Investigation is ongoing to identify the source and any additional products.
Who's At Risk?
Children under 5 years old, older adults, and persons with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms
Symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and/or vomiting. Some infections can cause severe bloody diarrhea and lead to life-threatening conditions such as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), chronic kidney disease, or neurologic problems.
