There have been 8 cases reported in 3 states. Three people have been hospitalized. One person has developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure. No deaths have been reported.
Who's At Risk?
Children under the age of 5 years, adults older than 65, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop severe illness as a result of an E. coli infection. However, even healthy older children and young adults can become seriously ill. Some people with E. coli infections may get a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).
Symptoms
Severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and/or vomiting.
