64 people sick and 20 hospitalized across 22 states to date. People in this outbreak have reported eating raw oysters and authorities are working to determine the exact products/brands. The outbreak is likely much bigger than the reported numbers with more sick people across more states.
Who's At Risk?
Salmonella mainly impacts young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Most healthy adults and children rarely become seriously ill after exposure to Salmonella.
Symptoms
Symptoms may include fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the organism can get into the bloodstream and producing more severe illness such as arterial infections (i.e. infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
