513 people sick, 134 hospitalized, and 1 death reported across 42 states and 1 U.S. territory. Multiple Salmonellosis outbreaks are linked to contact with backyard poultry, particularly ducks and chickens, with children under 5 accounting for nearly a quarter of cases. Poultry may carry Salmonella even when appearing healthy. Investigation is ongoing.
Who's At Risk?
Salmonella mainly impacts young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Most healthy adults and children rarely become seriously ill after exposure to Salmonella.
Symptoms
Symptoms may include fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), and abdominal pain. Illness usually occurs within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. In rare cases, the organism can get into the bloodstream resulting in severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
