Salmonella Outbreak
Severity
814 people sick (301 new), 201 hospitalized (67 new), and 1 death reported across 44 states (2 new). This update identifies a new Salmonella strain (Kedougou), bringing the total to 8 Salmonella outbreaks linked to backyard poultry, especially ducks and chickens. Children under 5 account for nearly a quarter of cases. More people are likely sick than currently reported, and additional states may be affected. Backyard poultry can carry and spread Salmonella even if they appear healthy. Investigation is ongoing.
Who's At Risk?
Salmonella mainly impacts young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Most healthy adults and children rarely become seriously ill after exposure to Salmonella.
Symptoms
Symptoms may include fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), and abdominal pain. Illness usually occurs within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. In rare cases, the organism can get into the bloodstream resulting in severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
