Severity
23 people sick and 7 hospitalized in 1 state to date. Outbreak linked to Happy Hens organic eggs. Recalled eggs were sold at restaurants, grocery stores, farmers' markets, and directly from the farm in 1 state. This outbreak is separate from the 134-case Midwest outbreak. Do not eat, serve, or sell the recalled eggs. Investigation is ongoing.
Who's At Risk?
Salmonella mainly impacts young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Most healthy adults and children rarely become seriously ill after exposure to Salmonella.
Symptoms
Symptoms may include fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), and abdominal pain. Illness usually occurs within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. In rare cases, the organism can get into the bloodstream resulting in severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
