2,272 people sick and 186 hospitalized across 40+ states since April, 2023. Exact food sources of contamination are unknown. However, past cyclosporiasis outbreaks in the U.S. have been linked to raspberries, basil, cilantro, snow peas and mesclun lettuce.
Who's At Risk?
People traveling or living in tropical or subtropical regions of the world may be at increased risk because cyclosporiasis is common in those regions. However, people living in other areas can become infected with Cyclospora by consuming food or water that has been contaminated with the parasite.
Symptoms
Cyclosporiasis, caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, causes diarrhea, loss of appetite, and cramping.
